Jan. 23—Scott and Wendy Bean built their auto repair and tire center, Scott’s Garage, in 2016 and already need to add on to their building.

The Beans plan to build a 2,400-square-foot addition to their original building at 514 Coombs St., just a few blocks southwest of downtown Lebanon. The addition will almost double the family business started by Scott’s father, Dave Bean, in the 1980s.

Dave’s Auto Repair operated on a smaller scale in rural Lebanon, and Scott grew up working in his dad’s shop and eventually took over. But he and Wendy needed a bigger building when his father died about 10 years ago, Scott said.

Now their son, Riley Bean, works alongside his father and master technician Rick Tyre, who has worked in the field for more than 36 years.

The Beans promised city officials they will add nine parking spaces to the 15 already there to ensure cars related to their shop don’t have to park on the street.

The Beans will plant trees and shrubs along the parking lot as part of city requirements, Lebanon Planning Director Ben Bontrager told the Lebanon Planning Commission.

The plan commission approved the site plan unanimously, contingent on the Beans meeting all city engineering requirements.

The expansion is necessary after the Beans contracted for the maintenance of additional commercial fleets and now need a new bay to service them.

Scott and Wendy have been married 23 years. She is the office manager, and he runs the shop.

Scott is a master technician with more than 30 years of experience and is an expert in diagnostics.

And the shop provides general auto repair for all makes and models but also specializes in boosting performance, especially in Dodge vehicles.

Scott has a dynamometer, a tool that measures engine horsepower and torque and guides mechanics in getting heightened performance from stock cars.

“The majority we modify are for people who want to race them at the track,” Scott said. “They’re looking for another 100 or 200 horsepower. We see what their budget is and what we can do to get them there.”

Riley Bean attended Ball State University and Ivy Tech and joined the family business 2018. His younger brother, Reed, is attending school to run the business side of the operation.

The shop provides services that include engine diagnostics and repair, transmission repair, tune-ups and more. They also sell and service tires. For more information, visit the website at or call 765-482-9006.
